Many small business owners assume cyber attacks only target large companies with valuable data. In reality, most website attacks are automated and untargeted, scanning the internet for any site with a known vulnerability, regardless of size. A small business website is often an easier target than a large enterprise site precisely because it usually has weaker security in place.
Why Small Business Websites Get Attacked
Automated bots do not choose targets based on business size. They scan for outdated software versions, weak passwords, and unpatched vulnerabilities across millions of websites, and attack whichever ones match. A small business site running an outdated plugin or a weak admin password is just as likely to be flagged as any other site with the same weakness.
Keep Software and Plugins Updated
Most website attacks exploit known vulnerabilities in outdated software, whether that is a content management system like WordPress, a plugin, or the underlying server software. Updates often include security patches for exactly these vulnerabilities. Running outdated versions of any part of your website's software leaves a known door open for attackers.
Use Strong, Unique Passwords and Two Factor Authentication
Weak or reused passwords remain one of the most common ways websites get compromised. Every admin account should use a strong, unique password, and two factor authentication should be enabled wherever the platform supports it, adding a second layer of verification beyond just a password.
Install an SSL Certificate
An SSL certificate encrypts data moving between a visitor's browser and your website, which is essential for any site collecting customer information, payments, or even just contact form submissions. Beyond security, Google also factors SSL into search rankings, meaning a site without it can lose both security and search visibility.
Regular Backups That Actually Work
A website backup is only useful if it is recent, complete, and tested. Automated daily or weekly backups stored separately from the main server ensure that if an attack or technical failure does happen, the website can be restored quickly rather than rebuilt from scratch.
Use a Web Application Firewall
A web application firewall filters incoming traffic and blocks common attack patterns before they reach your website, acting as a first line of defense against many automated attacks without requiring manual intervention for every threat.
Limit Login Attempts and Monitor Access
Allowing unlimited login attempts makes it easy for automated tools to guess passwords through brute force. Limiting login attempts and monitoring for unusual access patterns — like login attempts from unexpected locations or at unusual times — helps catch attacks early.
Secure Your Payment and Data Handling
For e-commerce and any website handling customer data, using established, secure payment gateways rather than building custom payment handling, and following data protection regulations for how customer information is stored and used, reduces both security risk and legal liability.
What to Do If Your Website Is Attacked
Having a response plan before an attack happens matters. This includes knowing who to contact for emergency support, having a recent backup ready to restore, and a plan for notifying customers if their data may have been affected. Businesses that plan for this in advance recover far faster than those scrambling to figure it out during an actual attack.
Security Is Ongoing, Not a One Time Setup
Website security is not a task completed once during development. New vulnerabilities are discovered constantly, and a website that was secure a year ago may not be secure today without ongoing maintenance. Businesses that treat security as an ongoing responsibility avoid becoming easy targets.
