When someone in Lucknow searches for a dentist near me, the best sweet shop in Hazratganj, or an IT company in Aliganj, the first thing Google shows is a map with three businesses. Most of the calls, direction requests and store visits go to those three listings. If your business is not there, your competitor is getting the customer that could have been yours.
The good news is that this map listing, called Google Business Profile, is completely free. The better news is that most local businesses in Lucknow have either not claimed it or have filled it half way. This guide explains exactly how to set it up, how to optimize every section, and how to keep growing your local visibility throughout 2026.
Google Business Profile, earlier known as Google My Business, is a free tool that lets you control how your business appears on Google Search and Google Maps. It shows your name, address, phone number, working hours, photos, reviews, services and website in one place.
For a local business, this profile often works harder than the website itself. A customer who is standing on the road looking for a service does not want to read a long page. They want your phone number, your location and proof that other people trust you. Your Google Business Profile gives all of that in a few seconds.
Google uses three main factors for local results.
Understanding these three factors makes every step below easier, because each step improves at least one of them.
Search for your business name on Google Maps. If a listing already exists, claim it. If not, create a new one. Google will ask you to verify that the business is real, usually through a video recording, a phone call, an email or a postcard sent to your address. Complete the verification in the same week, because an unverified profile cannot be fully managed and gets very little visibility.
Enter your business name exactly as it appears on your signboard, visiting card and website. Do not add keywords or locations to the name to try to rank higher. Google treats this as a violation and can suspend the profile.
The primary category is the single most important setting in the whole profile. Choose the category that best describes your main business, not a broad one. For example, choose Software Company or Digital Marketing Agency instead of a general term like Business Service. After that, add secondary categories for other services you offer, but only the ones that are real.
Fill in the full address, phone number, website link, opening hours and special hours for festivals or holidays. Small errors here cost real customers. If your board says you open at 10 in the morning and Google says 9, people will find a closed shop and leave a bad review.
If you visit customers at their location, such as a repair service or a home tutor, set your service areas instead of only showing an address. You can add the neighbourhoods and cities you serve, for example Aliganj, Gomti Nagar, Indira Nagar, Alambagh and Hazratganj.
You get 750 characters to describe your business. Use them well. Explain what you do, who you serve, where you are located and what makes you different. Write in natural language, mention your main services once or twice, and avoid promotional offers, links or all capital letters.
A good description reads like a helpful introduction to a new customer, not like a list of keywords.
Add each service or product as a separate entry with a short description and, where possible, a price or a starting price. Customers trust businesses that are open about pricing. It also gives Google more information about what you offer, which improves relevance for many different searches.
Profiles with good photos receive more calls and direction requests than profiles without them. Upload your logo, a cover photo, pictures of the outside of your office or shop, the inside, your team at work, your products and finished projects. Use clear photos taken in good light. Avoid stock images, because customers can tell the difference and Google prefers original content.
Add new photos every few weeks. A profile that keeps getting fresh photos looks active and trustworthy.
Google Posts let you share updates, offers, events and new blogs directly on your profile. Posting once or twice a week keeps your profile active. Each post should have a clear photo, a short message and a button such as Learn More, Call Now or Book. Posts stay visible for a limited time, so a steady schedule matters more than one big burst of activity.
Reviews are the strongest trust signal on your profile. They affect both ranking and the decision of the customer who is comparing you with others.
A calm and helpful reply to a negative review often builds more trust than ten positive reviews, because it shows that you care about your customers.
Customers can ask questions publicly on your profile. Do not wait for them. Add the most common questions yourself, such as working hours, parking, payment methods, home service and pricing, and answer them clearly. This saves time for your team and helps customers decide faster.
Your business name, address and phone number should be exactly the same on your Google profile, website, social media pages and business directories. Even small differences like Sector D and Sector-D can confuse search engines. Consistent information across the internet builds prominence and trust.
Inside your profile dashboard, Google shows how many people found you through Search and Maps, how many called you, how many asked for directions and how many visited your website. Check these numbers every month. If views are high but calls are low, improve your photos, reviews and description. If views themselves are low, review your categories, services and posting activity.
A well optimized new profile usually starts showing improvement in a few weeks, but strong local ranking is built over several months. Businesses that stay active, keep collecting reviews and keep their information updated slowly move ahead of competitors who set up the profile once and forgot about it.
Your Google Business Profile works best when it is supported by a good website. Create a clear page for each service, mention your city and areas naturally, add your address and map, and make sure the site loads quickly on mobile. Is Google Business Profile really free?
Yes. Creating and managing a Google Business Profile does not cost anything. You only pay if you choose to run Google Ads separately.
Can I have a profile without a shop or office?
Yes, if you serve customers at their location. You can hide your address and show only your service areas. A home address should not be shown publicly if you do not meet customers there.
How many reviews do I need to rank higher?
There is no fixed number. Regular, genuine and recent reviews with thoughtful replies matter more than a large number of old reviews.
Why did my profile get suspended?
Common reasons are a keyword stuffed business name, a fake address, duplicate listings or false information. Correct the issues and submit an appeal through the profile dashboard.
Should I hire an agency or do it myself?
You can start yourself using this guide. If you do not have the time to post, reply to reviews and monitor results every week, a local SEO team can do it consistently and faster.
